John the Baptist’s water baptism

“And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.” Luke 7:29-30
What Jesus said about water baptism
“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” Mark
What Peter said about water baptism
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts
What Paul said and did with water baptism
“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Acts 19:5
“And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” Acts
What Peter added to the teaching on water baptism
“Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto [even] baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:” 1 Peter
Notice: This verse reads ‘baptism doth also now save us’.
Holy Spirit cleanses of sin, water cleanses of sin, and Jesus’ blood cleanses of sin
“And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree inone.” 1 John 5:8
Holy Spirit cleanses of sin
“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to
bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:” Matthew
“Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff
with unquenchable fire.” Matthew 3:12
Water cleanses of sin
“And he came into all the country about
“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”Mk 6:16
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts
“And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” Acts
Jesus’ Blood cleanses of sin
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:” Colossians
“How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” Hebrew
“And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.” Hebrew
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7
Note: The Acts of the Apostles is a book teaching church doctrine. The Gospels are books teaching church doctrine. When one comes to the books of letters one is expected to already know about and be practicing the doctrine of water baptism, so when one reads Romans 10:9-10 the doctrine of water baptism has already been taught and understood. Confession is simply added.
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” Titus 3:5
How does a person get ‘the washing of regeneration’? By the easy believism taught by Billy Graham and others? NO! Simply saying a prayer is not enough the Holy Bible teaches.
Water baptism is of faith. Salvation is of faith.
Is water baptism needed for salvation?
The answer is found in Romans 6:3-5 plus many other verses; one must have water baptism for salvation, no water baptism the right way – no salvation!
“Know you not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:” Romans 6:3-5
“In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with [him] through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.” Colossians 2:11-12
“John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.” Mark 1:4
“And he came into all the country about
John the Baptist’s ministry
“To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,” Luke 1:77
“Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,” Luke 1:78
“And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. 30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.” Luke 7:29-30
“To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” Luke 1:79
“And were baptized of him in
II. Jesus and Water Baptism
A. Did Jesus’ disciples water baptize?
“After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the
“When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)” John 4:1-2
B. Did Jesus end water baptism of repentance for the remission of sins? No Jesus said,
“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.” Mark
Those that believe will be baptized properly or they will be damned!
C. Verses with Water Baptism & Holy Spirit Baptism
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the
According to Jesus, how does a person get “born again”? He/she must be “born of water” - water baptism “and [of] the Spirit” - Holy Spirit baptism. If he/she doesn’t, he/she “cannot enter into the
III. Peter and Water Baptism
“Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?” Acts
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. (What is required for salvation? Repentance, Water baptism in Jesus’
name for the remission of sins, & Holy Spirit baptism!)” Acts
“For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” Acts
“For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.) “ Acts
Note: The flood washed away sin, the sin of the world – those not in the ark died.
At the same time 8 were saved in the ark – saved by water. Water baptism saves!
IV. Paul and Water Baptism
“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Acts 19:5
“And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” Acts
“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also [in the likeness] of [his] resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with [him], that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members [as] instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members [as] instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things [is] death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:1-23
“And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:11
“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” Titus 3:5
Water baptism is of faith. Salvation is of faith.
Is water baptism needed for salvation? The answer is found in Romans 6:3-5 plus many other verses; one must have water baptism for salvation, no water baptism the right way – no salvation!
John the Baptist, Jesus, Peter, and Paul make it clear that water baptism is for repentance and wash/remission of sin. Water baptism must be in the name of Jesus Christ.
The only difference between water baptism before and after the cross is that now we must be baptized in Jesus’ name.
V. Colossians 3:17
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” Colossians 3:17
Do you cast out demons in the name of Jesus? Mark
Do you lay hands on the sick for healing in the name of Jesus? Mark
Are you not protected by the name of Jesus? Mark
Do you teach in the name of Jesus? Acts 4:17-18,
Are we to assemble in the name of Jesus? Mattew 18:20
Do you pray in the name of Jesus? John 14:13-14; James 5:14
Do you anoint in the name of Jesus? James 5:14
Do you do miracles in the name of Jesus? Acts
Do you do wonders in the name of Jesus? Acts
Do you speak boldly in the name of Jesus? Acts
Why not water baptize in the name of Jesus??? The Apostles did!!!! Acts
“For in him (Jesus) dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” Colossians 2:9
“And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is
by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.” Acts
“And on the faith of His name, this one whom you see and know was made firm by His name, and the faith which came
through Him gave to him this complete soundness before you all.” JG Acts
“For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there I am in their midst.” Matthew 18:20
“He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” Mark 16:16-18
“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” John 14:13
“If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.” John 14:14
“And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.” John 16:23
“Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.” John 16:24
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts
“But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.” Acts
“And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.” Acts
“By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.” Acts
“Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:” James
VI. Matthew 28:19-20 What’s the Problem?
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:19-20
The name of Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is Jesus! It doesn’t say in the names of … .
Jehovah of the Old Covenant is Jesus of the New Covenant. Jesus is His new revealed name.
“For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” Galatians 3:27
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, [do] all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” Colossians 3:17
Whatever the apostles understood Jesus to mean in Matthew 28:19 is what they did in the Acts of the Apostles.
In the name of Jesus:
“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts
“Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well
as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry
certain days.” Act
“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Acts 19:5
“And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” Acts
“But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwells in you.” Romans 8:9-11
“That if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved. 10For with the heart man believes to righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made to salvation.” Romans 10:9-10
VIII. Ephesians 2:8-9
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
When God tells someone to do something, it is not works; it is obedience!
When a person is water baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the washing away of sin, it is in obedience to His command. To not obey Jesus is SIN! To not obey Jesus and be water baptized in His name for the washing away of sin is SIN, because you are in direct disobedience to His Word, Acts
Hebrews 2:3-4 is the same as Mark
“How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard [him]; God also bearing witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?” Hebrews 2:3-4
X. Water Baptism is
1. “An answer of a good conscience toward God” 1 Peter
2. “Purifying” John 3:25
3. Part of the purpose of baptism is for repentance Mark 1:4; Luke 3:3
4. Washes away sin Acts 22:16
5. For the remission of sins Acts 2:38
6. “...Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord...” Romans 6:3-11
XI. Is Water Baptism Required for Salvation?
The Holy Bible clearly teaches that the answer is YES!
Verses teaching Water Baptism as part of Salvation:
“And he came into all the country about

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” Acts
“When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Acts 19:5
“And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.” Acts

XII. Types of Water in the Old Covenant
“And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;” 1 Corinthians 10:2
“Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.” 1 Peter 3:20
“Then there arose a question between [some] of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying. And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond
Pharisees – the Pharisees knew that water baptism makes one holy (purifying), so they wanted to purify everything.
“Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from
And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen (449),
hands, they found fault. 3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash (3538) their hands oft, eat
not, holding the tradition of the elders. 4 And when they come from the market, except they wash (907,
baptize), they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing
(909, baptizing) of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. 5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked
him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen
(449) hands? 6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is
written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.7 Howbeit in vain do they
worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of
God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing (#909, baptizing) of pots and cups: and many other
such like things ye do.” Mark 7:1-8
“And Eleazar the priest shall take of her blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood directly before the tabernacle of the congregation seven times:” Numbers 19:4
‘And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of
“And he that is to be cleansed shall wash his clothes, and shave off all his hair, and wash himself in water, that he may be clean: and after that he shall come into the camp, and shall tarry abroad out of his tent seven days.” Leviticus 14:8
“But it shall be on the seventh day, that he shall shave all his hair off his head and his beard and his eyebrows, even all his hair he shall shave off: and he shall wash his clothes, also he shall wash his flesh in water, and he shall be clean.” Leviticus 14:9
“And on the eighth day he shall take two he lambs without blemish, and one ewe lamb of the first year without blemish (type of Jesus), and three tenth deals of fine flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil (type of Holy Spirit), and one log of oil.” Leviticus 14:10
“And the priest that maketh him clean shall present the man that is to be made clean, and those things, before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation:” Leviticus
“And the priest shall take one he lamb, and offer him for a trespass offering, and the log of oil, and wave them for a wave offering before the LORD:” Leviticus 14:12
“And he shall slay the lamb in the place where he shall kill the sin offering and the burnt offering, in the holy place: for as the sin offering is the priest's, so is the trespass offering: it is most holy:” Leviticus
“And the priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering, and the priest shall put it upon the tip of the right ear of him that is to be cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot:” Leviticus 14:14 Note: Then only three points, now entire body

“Only the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead,” Numbers 31:22
“Every thing that may abide the fire (baptism of Holy Spirit), ye shall make it go through the fire, and it shall be clean: nevertheless it shall be purified with the water of separation: and all that abideth not the fire ye shall make go through the water.” Numbers 31:23
“And ye shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and ye shall be clean, and afterward ye shall come into the camp.” Numbers 31:24
“In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:” Colossians
“Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.” Colossians 2:12
“And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;” Colossians
Note: Are these verses teaching that circumcision has been replaced by water baptism?
“This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.” Genesis 17:10
“And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.” Genesis 17:14
Note: No circumcision, then separated from God in the Old Covenant.
“Therefore say unto the house of
“And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, saith the Lord GOD, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.” Ezekiel 36:23

”And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.” Ezekiel 36:27
“And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.” Ezekiel 36:28
First piece of furniture - Altar for burnt offerings
“And thou shalt set the altar of the burnt offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation.” (Exodus 27:1-8) Exodus 40:6
Note: Death/bloodshed sin offering Jesus is our sin offering
Second piece of furniture - Brazen altar After the Brazen altar one enters the Tabernacle/Temple
“And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,” Exodus 30:17
“Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein.” Exodus 30:18
“For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat:” Exodus 30:19
“When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation, they shall wash with water, that they die not;
or when they come near to the altar to minister, to burn offering made by fire unto the LORD:” Exodus 30:20
“So they shall wash their hands and their feet, that they die not: and it shall be a statute forever to them, even to him and to his seed throughout their generations.” Exodus 30:21
“And thou shalt set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar, and shalt put water therein.” Exodus 40:7
Note: Water to wash away the effects of sin. Water is to wash away impurities. Water baptism washes away the sins of a believer.
“Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God.” Hebrews 9:6
